Dear Droseraholics,
I always wanted to grow Drosera collinsiae. But a couple of years ago it wasn´t really so easy to obtain this species. I found someone who was willing to sell me some seeds. I took seed of two different forms of D. collinsiae and sowed them in Nov. 2012.
The location form from Mbuluzi River - which flows in Swaziland close to the border to South Africa - turned out to be spectacular and extraordinary for a D. collinsiae! I have already been wondering if this plant may probably be a new taxon. Perhaps Mr. Fleischmann will one day tell us!
Here´s what it looks like:
I must admit I am very thrilled about that plant! Unfortunately I have only received two adult plants out of 30 seeds. The germination rate was quite low anyway. But I am told this species can easily be propagated by leaf cuttings. I will try this in spring.
Apart from that one plant has flowered in November last year. The inflorescence has only borne 3 flowers but nevertheless has supplied me with some seed for another attempt to raise this species.
Now compare to the other form of D. collinsiae which appears to be more typical! This form has no location data!
A back light image of course! Can´t do without that. ;-)
Well...
At the GfP forum we are wondering what the indication "Faryland" (also sometimes "Fairyland") is standing for. D. collinsiae "Faryland" is obviously the most popular form of D. collinsiae. There´s however some doubt that D. collinsiae "Faryland" is a true D. collinsiae at all. Seems there is some need to establish a little order for the taxon Drosera collinsiae.
Cheers
Andreas
